Happy Makar Sankranti 2026 : Celebrating the Sun’s Journey
Today, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, marks this auspicious harvest festival, Makara Sankranti celebrated across India with great joy and enthusiasm.

Makar Sankranti is an auspicious, mid-harvest Hindu festival that signifies the transition of the sun entering the Makara, or Capricorn, zodiac sign, thereby marking the end of winter and the arrival of a new season with longer days.
In some parts of the world, it is known as Pongal and Uttarayan ; and it is regarded as highly auspicious and honors Lord Surya, the sun god.
Auspicious Timing: The Sun enters the Capricorn sign (Makar Rashi) today. The Maha Punya Kaal, considered the most sacred period for rituals, is observed from 3:13 PM to 5:04 PM.
History and Significance :
According to the Hindu mythology, Sankranti was a divinity who slew the demon Sankarasur on the day after Makar Sankranti, also known as Karidin or Kinkrant.
Sankranti signifies the Sun’s transition into Capricorn, indicating the end of winter and the arrival of a new season with longer days.
On the auspicious day, devotees rise early in the morning, around sunrise, do prayer and chanting, start with the rituals after taking bath, cleaning the house, drawing rangoli with different colors, preparing some delicious sweet dishes like Pongal which is made of rice, jaggery, ghee, cardamom etc.
As it is considered an auspicious day, many people provide charity and donations to the less fortunate.
Regional Variations: While most of the country celebrates today, some regional calendars, including parts of Karnataka, may observe festivities on January 15.
Traditions: Families are coming together to fly colorful kites, enjoy traditional sweets like til-gul (sesame and jaggery), and take holy dips in sacred rivers.
