Lakshadweep – The Enchanting Union Territory of India

Lakshadweep, an union territory of India meaning “one lakh islands”. It is an archipelago of 35 islands serving as the maritime boundary between the Arabian Sea to the west and the Laccadive Sea to the east.

It derived it’s name from Malayalam and Sanskrit. Lakshadweep was previously known as Laccadive islands. 

Geography :

Lakshadweep is located 200 to 440 km off the southwestern coast of India. It is an archipelago of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. The islands are scattered across 32 sq km of lagoon rich waters and cover an area of approximately 32 sq km.

Islands in Lakshadweep :

The major islands in Lakshadweep are Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Agatti, Minicoy, Amini, and Andrott. Kavaratti serves as the administrative headquarters and is the most developed island. Each island has its own unique charm, offering a mix of coral sand beaches, coconut groves, and vibrant marine life.

Biodiversity :

Lakshadweep is a paradise for nature lovers and marine enthusiasts. Of the total 36 islands, 10 are inhabited. The airport is on Agatti Island. The main occupation of the people here is fishing and coconut cultivation.

The coral reefs surrounding the islands are home to a diverse range of marine life, including colorful coral formations, exotic fish species, and even sea turtles.

Language : 

The principal languages of Lakshadweep are Malayalam and Dhivehi.

Jeseri is the primary native language spoken in the territory. It is a dialect of Malayalam  with the influence of Arabic similar to Arabi Malayalam. It is spoken on the islands such as Chetlat, Bitra, Kiltan, Kadmat, Androth, Agatti and Kalpeni. Each of the islands have their own dialect.

Capital :

Kavaratti serves as the capital of the Union Territory and the region comes under the jurisdiction of the Kerala High Court.

History : 

These islands are mentioned in the Buddhist Jataka stories of 6th century BCE. The Islam was also established in the region when Muslims arrived around 7th century. This region was ruled by the Chera dynasty, the Chola dynasty and finally the Kingdom of Kannur. The Catholic Portugese arrived here around 1498 but were expelled by 1545.

The region was then ruled by the Muslim house of Arakkal, who were vassals to the Kolathiri Rajas of Kannur, followed by Tipu Sultan. After Tipu’s Death, most of the region were under the rule of the British and later the Union Territory was formed in 1956.

Cultural Heritage :

It has the Indian , Arab and African influences in its culture. The predominantly Muslim population celebrates festivals like Eid and Muharram. The culture is almost similar to that of Mappilas in the nearest mainland state of Kerala.

The dances here include : Lava Dance, Kolkali Dance and Parichakli Dance.

Tourism :

Despite its relatively remote location, Lakshadweep has been gaining popularity as a tourist destination. The white sandy coastlines, abundant scenic charm and tranquil surroundings make Lakshadweep a popular family as well as honeymooning destination. It is visited by tourists from all around the globe. Lakshadweep Island boasts untouched and pristine natural beauty, with its clear turquoise waters, coral reefs, and white sandy beaches.

Lakshadweep is prone to natural disasters such as cyclones and tsunamis. The islands’ geographical location makes them susceptible to these calamities, posing a constant threat to the lives and properties of the residents.

Agatti Island serves as a gateway to Lakshadweep union territory. The airport located in the island is the sole airport in Lakshadweep. It operates direct flights from Kochi and Bangalore.

  • Book a flight to Kochi International Airport, which is well-connected to major cities in India.
  • From Kochi, you can take a connecting flight to Agatti Airport. Plan your trip accordingly, as the flights to Agatti are limited and may not be available everyday.
  • Visitors to Lakshadweep need to obtain an entry permit through Lakshadweep Administration online portal or through Travel agents as the entry is restricted.
  • Agatti Island attracts tourists and serves as a hub, who can choose to stay there itself, else they can travel to other islands via ships or helicopters.

How To Reach Lakshadweep By Ship :

Cruise is an accessible mode of transport for those who wish to go to the Lakshadweep archipelago. The fascinating group of about 1 lakh islands, located in the placid waters of the Arabian Sea. One can board a cruise to Lakshadweep from Kochi, Beypore, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Goa.

  • The main boarding point for ships to Lakshadweep starts from Kochi. Arrive in Kochi.
  • Lakshadweep Administration operates passenger ships that connect Kochi with various islands in Lakshadweep. Ships have limited schedules and may not be available everyday, so it’s advisable to check the ship schedule in advance.
  • Visitors to Lakshadweep need to obtain an entry permit through Lakshadweep Administration online portal or through Travel agents as the entry is restricted.
  • Once the permits are ready, board the ship from the designated port in Kochi.
  • The travel time by ship takes around 14-20 hours, based on the destination island. Ships have basic facilities for passengers, including cabins and dining areas.
  • Depending on your destination, the ship will make stops at different islands. Board at the designated island and enjoy your stay in Lakshadweep.
